ADVENTURE
If you are looking for adventure, you must go to the "Lencois Maranhenses" ecological park. It is far north in the state of Maranhao, and consists of a huge sand dunes and lagoons region. First you must fly to Sao Luis, the capital of the state, and a busy port. There you can see the historical center with colonial buildings. Then, on to Barreirinhas 270 Kms by asphalted road, preferably by bus, it is a 3 hours drive. Also there are flights in small planes to Barreirinhas asphalted airstrip, it takes about 50 minutes, and the view is great.
There is a good resort there and several budget hotels. To tour the park there are Jeeps and Pick-ups with drivers/guides that will take you to the best spots. You will see unending white sand dunes with crystal clear lagoons in between where you can swim and refresh from the heat.
There are several kinds of birds at the park, as the rivers have plenty of fish. Remember to bring your sunglasses, protect your head, and wear sunscreen. The road to the dunes is not paved, and it takes a few hours to get there.
Another tour from Barreirinhas is down the river by boat and to several beautiful beaches, with picturesque fishing villages. The best time to see the lagoons is from July to December, when there is more water, but there is enough water all year round if you go at another time. If you are strong and fit, you can go trekking to the dunes, but you must always take a guide because it is easy to get lost as the scenery repeats itself endlessly and there is almost no shelter from the sun.
