MONEY

In Brazil the currency is the Real pronounced ree-al, represented by the symbol R$. Mostly referred to by Brazilians in the plural form Reais pronounced ree-eys.

Implemented since 1995, the Real has stayed pretty stable against the Dollar, and is presently valued at about US$ 0.50, so you will probably get aprox. two Reals for your Dollar at exchange shops in airports and malls or at your hotel front desk. You will need cash for taxis, restaurants, bars, kiosques, souvenirs, etc., and especially for tips (foreign currency credit cards have limited acceptance).

Try to get a lot of small bills, it is not so easy to change those R$ 50,00 bills on the street.

Be careful and do not flash around large wads of cash. R$ 30,00 ($15.00) will get you a good half hour taxi ride (about ten or fifteen kilometers), and R$ 60,00 will probably get you to the airport in the big cities. R$ 5,00 is a very generous tip for the cab driver.

By the way, the best and safest cabs are the "Radio Taxi" cabs, which you must call for by phone. Tips for room service are about R$ 3,00 to R$ 5,00 according to the type of hotel.

Restaurants include normally a 10% service fee, but if you have been well served you are expected to give another 5% or 10% extra to your waiter because otherwise he will get only a small part of the fee which is usually shared by the whole staff. Do not take a lot of cash to the beach, especially in Rio, cause when you are in the water, your things left on the sand may disappear. There is almost always a safe in your hotel room where you should leave your valuables at all times.
