Not far from Curitiba (135 Kms East) down on the way to the ocean, you will arrive in Joinville, the largest city in the state of Santa Catarina. Influenced by the European immigration of Germans, Swiss and Norwegians, and later by Italians and French, you will notice the peculiar ambience in this industrious city.
Further along this same road, another 70 Kms will bring you to the port of Itajai and the adjacent vacations city of Balneário Camboriu, which is built along the beach.
Another local attraction is the largest Brazilian amusement park and resort called Beto Carreiro World, it is the Brazilian equivalent to Disney World, and is always fun for Kids and adults alike. It is located about 10 Kms inland from Itajai.
Also worth visiting when you are in this area, 40 Kms from Itajai is the pretty city of Blumenau where most of the population is of German descent, and many houses and buildings reflect their influence. There is a traditional "Oktoberfest" festival in Blumenau every year with lot's of beer, sausages, sauerkraut, brass band music and folk dancing.
The capital of the state of Santa Catarina is Florianopolis and it is located on a very large island bearing the same name as the state, Santa Catarina. The city also occupies a part of the coast across the channel. The city is fairly big (350.000) but the island population swells dramatically with summer vacationers spread along the more than 100 marvelous beaches.
Famous for the surf contests and other water sports, Florianopolis is the favorite vacations location in the south of Brazil.
